Japan is home to some of the world’s most refined cycling environments. Among them are the officially certified National Cycle Routes (NCR)—a designation awarded to routes that showcase not only excellent cycling infrastructure, but also the history, culture, and landscapes of their regions.

As of January 2026, six routes across Japan have earned this distinction.
Now, an exclusive inbound cycling tour has been launched, focusing on three of Japan’s most iconic National Cycle Routes, offering riders a rare opportunity to experience the country through its roads, food, and stories.

Discover Three Iconic National Cycle Routes

This tour brings together three routes that symbolize Japan’s cycle tourism at its finest.

 Tsukuba–Kasumigaura Rinrin Road (Ibaraki Prefecture)

Built on the former railway tracks of the historic Tsukuba Railway, the Tsukuba–Kasumigaura Rinrin Road is one of Japan’s most accessible and scenic cycling routes.

Riders enjoy flat, well-paved paths with views of Mount Tsukuba, rural rice fields, and Lake Kasumigaura, Japan’s second-largest lake. The route combines gentle countryside riding with a full loop around the lake, making it ideal for both leisure cyclists and long-distance riders.

During the tour, participants witness the powerful sight of traditional Hobiki-bune sail fishing boats, experience lotus root harvesting—a local specialty—and visit a regional sake brewery to explore the depth of Japanese sake culture.

Accommodation includes BEB5 Tsuchiura by Hoshino Resorts, a cyclist-focused hotel designed for bike-friendly travel, as well as a stay at Tsukuba Mountain Onsen, where riders can relax in natural hot springs after a day in the saddle.
Dinner is served at a long-established Japanese restaurant, featuring seasonal cuisine rooted in local tradition.

 Biwaichi (Shiga Prefecture)

Encircling Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest freshwater lake, Biwaichi is a legendary 180-kilometer loop that delivers both challenge and reward.

From the Biwako Ohashi Bridge, cyclists are treated to sweeping 360-degree panoramic views over the lake and surrounding mountains. Beyond riding, the tour offers immersive cultural experiences such as traditional Japanese sweets-making, kimono dressing, and hands-on craft workshops using rare Lake Biwa pearls.

Guests stay at premium accommodations such as the Lake Biwa Marriott Hotel, where evenings are highlighted by luxurious dinners featuring Omi Beef, one of Japan’s most renowned wagyu brands.

Shimanami Kaido (Hiroshima & Ehime Prefectures)

Known worldwide as Japan’s ultimate cycling destination, the Shimanami Kaido connects Honshu and Shikoku via seven spectacular bridges spanning the Seto Inland Sea.

This island-hopping route blends ocean views, gentle climbs, and vibrant local life. On this tour, riders trace the maritime history of the Murakami Pirates, once rulers of these waters, by boat. They also visit a winery on Omishima Island and enjoy seasonal citrus picking—hallmarks of the Setouchi region’s rich food culture.

Accommodation includes the scenic cyclist-favorite Shimanami Kaido WAKKA, as well as Imabari Kokusai Hotel. Dining experiences range from Michelin-starred seafood restaurants to open-air luxury BBQs overlooking the sea.
