We are a collective of cycling enthusiasts and local experts passionate about sharing the beauty of Japan. Our mission is to provide authentic stories and practical tips to help cyclists from around the world enjoy the ultimate riding experience in Japan.

On October 25, 2026, one of Asia’s largest international cycling events returns to Japan’s most iconic cycling route: the Cycling Shimanami 2026.Held only once every two years, this special event transforms the legendary Shimanami Kaido into a car-free cycling paradise—including exclusive access to an expressway normally closed to bicycles.

Entry registration begins in stages from April 13, 2026. If riding in Japan has been on your bucket list, this is your moment.

What Is the Shimanami Kaido?

Stretching approximately 70 km (43 miles), the Shimanami Kaido connects Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture with Imabari in Ehime Prefecture. The route hops across islands in the Seto Inland Sea via seven spectacular bridges, offering constant ocean views and gentle sea breezes.Recognized by CNN as one of the “World’s 7 Most Amazing Bike Routes,” this coastal cycling road is often called Japan’s Cycling Holy Land. Riders enjoy:

  • Turquoise waters of the Seto Inland Sea
  • Quiet fishing villages and citrus groves
  • Architecturally striking suspension bridges
  • Smooth, well-marked cycling lanes

It’s one of the safest and most scenic long-distance cycling routes in Asia—perfect for both experienced riders and cycling-focused travelers.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Ride on the Expressway

The true highlight of Cycling Shimanami is access to the Nishiseto Expressway main roadway.Normally reserved for motor vehicles, this expressway (kōsoku dōro – Japanese toll highway) opens exclusively to cyclists for one day. Riding on wide, uninterrupted asphalt high above the sea delivers panoramic views that are impossible to experience during regular travel. It’s not just a cycling event—it’s a rare privilege.

 Eight Courses for Every Rider

Cycling Shimanami 2026 offers eight route options (total capacity approx. 7,000 riders), making it accessible to a wide range of abilities.

  • Long Course – Approx. 140 km
The ultimate challenge: a round-trip between Imabari and Onomichi. Ideal for endurance cyclists and long-distance enthusiasts.
  • One-Way Course – Approx. 70 km
Ride one direction across the islands, then return by ferry or bus. A perfect choice for travelers who want to savor the scenery without riding back.
  • Middle & Short Courses – 30–50 km
Designed for beginners, families, and recreational riders. Even these shorter routes include the thrilling expressway section.

Whether you’re a seasoned gran fondo rider or a cycling traveler exploring Japan for the first time, there’s a course to match your goals.
