For cyclists who dream of discovering Japan at their own pace, Rinko is an essential travel skill. In Japan, bicycles cannot be brought onto trains in their original form. Instead, riders use a special “Rinko bag” to pack their bikes, making it possible to combine cycling with trains, subways, or even buses. With Rinko, you can reach scenic destinations by train and ride from there, or shorten your journey by hopping on the train when you’re tired. It’s a flexible way to expand your cycling adventures across Japan.

What You’ll Need

  1. Rinko Bag – A lightweight, foldable bag that completely covers your bike. Available at bike shops or online in Japan. JR requires all parts of the bike to be inside the bag.
  1. Straps or Bands – To keep your frame and wheels tightly secured after disassembly.
  2. Basic Tools – Such as a hex wrench, for removing wheels or adjusting handlebars.

How to Pack Your Bike (Basic Rinko Steps)

  1. Find a Quiet Spot – Prepare your bike outside the station or in a calm area, not in crowded platforms.
  2. Remove the Wheels – Take off the front and rear wheels. Be careful with disc brakes.
  3. Secure Frame & Wheels – Strap them together compactly. A chain cover or plastic bag helps keep things clean.
  1. Pack into the Rinko Bag – Place everything inside and ensure nothing sticks out. Otherwise, boarding may be refused.

Travel Etiquette

  • On Trains: Place your bag near the end of the car, standing upright against the wall.
  • Avoid Rush Hours: Don’t travel during commuter times (7:00–9:00, 17:00–19:00). Early mornings or midday are more relaxed.
