When the sun sets, Tokyo undergoes a stunning transformation. The city reveals a completely different face: the serene silence of historic temples, the electric pulse of neon-drenched districts, and the cutting-edge brilliance of massive projection mapping.

To experience this “otherworldy” Tokyo at your own pace, there is no better tool than a bicycle. Within a compact 15km radius, Tokyo packs an incredible density of sights. Cycling allows you to bridge the gap between neighborhoods that are too far to walk, yet pass by too quickly on a train. By using Japan’s convenient bike-sharing services (power-assisted rental bikes available via app), you can effortlessly navigate the city’s hills and alleys.

Let’s embark on a night ride from the traditional streets of Asakusa to the futuristic skyscrapers of Shinjuku.

Asakusa to Sumida River: A Fusion of Heritage and Horizon

Our journey begins at Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest and most iconic temple. At night, the vermilion Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) and the main hall are beautifully illuminated, offering a dreamlike tranquility that stands in stark contrast to the daytime crowds.

From there, pedal toward Azumabashi Bridge crossing the Sumida River. The view from here is a quintessential symbol of “Old meets New.” The Tokyo Skytree shimmering against the dark sky, paired with the unique golden “flame” monument of the Asahi Group headquarters, creates a spectacular backdrop for the start of your ride.

Akihabara to Nihonbashi: From Neon Seas to Historic Stones

Heading west along the river, you’ll enter the world’s premier “electric town,” Akihabara. Riding through the canyons of towering billboards and kaleidoscopic neon lights feels like stepping directly into a cyberpunk film.

As the sensory overload of Akihabara fades, you arrive at the sophisticated district of Nihonbashi. The district’s namesake bridge, a Renaissance-style stone structure completed in 1911, glows with a heavy, majestic beauty at night. Since the Edo period (1603–1868), this bridge has served as the starting point for Japan’s five major highways. Passing over it feels like crossing through time into the heart of the metropolis.

Tokyo Station & Gyoko-dori: The Gateway to the City

Next, the magnificent red-brick facade of Tokyo Station (Marunouchi Side) appears. The highlight here is Gyoko-dori, a grand, paved boulevard stretching from the station toward the Imperial Palace. If you stop in the center of this wide stone path and look back, you’ll see the station standing with dignified elegance, perfectly framed by the symmetrical lights of modern skyscrapers.

The Seat of Power to the “Sleepless Town” of Shinjuku

Leaving Tokyo Station, ride alongside the Imperial Palace moats toward the National Diet Building, the center of Japanese politics. The white structure glows softly in the dark, surrounded by an air of quiet authority.

From here, the atmosphere shifts dramatically as you approach Shinjuku. The silence of the government district gives way to the dazzling lights of Kabukicho, Tokyo’s famous “sleepless” entertainment district.

Pass under the iconic red neon gate to find the life-sized Godzilla Head peering over the Toho Building. Navigating these chaotic, high-energy streets on a bike is a true urban safari.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building: A Grand Finale of Light

The climax of the ride is the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in West Shinjuku. This towering landmark hosts “TOKYO Night & Light,” one of the world’s largest permanent projection mapping displays.

The sight of latest technology and music transforming the massive twin towers into a canvas of light is the perfect reward for your 15km journey. Be sure to check the screening schedule in advance to catch your favorite program.

Ride Tips for Travelers

  • Utilize Bike-Share: Tokyo has more slopes than you might expect. Using an electric-assist bike-share makes the journey sweat-free and enjoyable.
  • Follow the Rules: In Japan, bicycles must ride on the left side of the road. Ensure your lights are on after dark for safety.

Riding the Waves of Light

As the projection mapping at the City Hall ends and you look up at the night sky, you’ll feel as though you’ve traveled through several different worlds in a single evening.

By feeling the glow of the backstreets on your skin and the cool river breeze on your face, you become part of the living kaleidoscope that is Tokyo. Cycling is the only way to truly touch the “texture” of the city—it is a luxury of freedom that no train or bus can provide.

When the night falls, why not grab a bike and discover the secret, shimmering side of Tokyo for yourself ?
